In honour of the Dutch, Koningsdag this weekend I’m having a kapsalon (and a pepperoni parmo).
I made my own kapsalon.
Chips topped with gouda, doner meat and more gouda, baked in the oven. Topped with chopped and seeded cherry tomatoes, cucumber and onions garlic mayo and chilli sauce.

I left out the lettuce. If I want to eat crunchy water, I’ll put a cube of ice in my mouth.
I always like to sing three verses of ours though most occasions only call for one, some ceremonial occasions call for two.
I don’t think I could even attempt the Dutch national anthem.

I just looked up the Dutch anthem.
Three or four lines in, ‘The k ing of Spain, I have always honoured’?.
There’s a lot of talk of god, more so than any other anthem I’ve heard.

I recall one a few years ago which had a load of guys in, and then ended with a guy scratching a Bulldog that was standing on the passenger seat of a van. It was Willem’s Koningslied.
I can’t find it on YouTube other than when Have I Got News For You looked at it.

I think t his requires the origins story of kapsalon to be told: in 2003 a hairdresser from Rotterdam asked for a special dish with his favourite ingredients at his local Döner shop, that became his regular order, and got known as kapsalon(meaning heardresser’s) , to refer to the ‘inventor’s’ profession
